SIGNS OF HOUSE TROUBLE YOU SHOULDN’T IGNORE

As a homeowner, it’s essential to be aware of any issues in your home so that you can take action and protect both your home and family. Here are three signs of possible danger to your house and what to do if you see them.

Overflowing Gutters

Overflowing gutters are a definite cause for concern because they often lead to roof, foundation, and landscaping damage. As your gutters start collecting dead leaves and standing water, the gutter will start leaking and growing mold.

The first step to preventing overflowing gutters is simple: clean them periodically (at least twice a year—once in the late spring and once in the late summer/early fall).  In addition to regular cleanings, you can prevent overflowing gutters by checking to make sure that your gutters are installed at the correct pitch, height, and size.

Uneven Floors

Uneven floors could just mean the flooring wasn’t installed properly or it could be a sign of foundational issues. Sloping floors can cause you to trip or fall, or can cause objects to fall off shelves and become damaged. If you suspect foundation damage, you should immediately call an inspector and seek out a quality contractor as soon as possible.

If your floors are sloping, you should begin a visual inspection of the foundation of your home. Carefully look over the entire foundation and take note of any areas with obvious damage, cracking, and discoloration. Try to check the floor joists in your crawlspace or basement for signs of warping, damage, or pulling away from the main structure.

Mold

There are thousands of different species of mold. Many of these varieties are not harmful, but there are a few species of mold that are incredibly toxic and commonly grow on wet surfaces. If you notice mold, don’t ignore it! “Black mold,” or stachybotrys, is one of the most dangerous types of mold. It can cause you, your family, and any guests in your home to develop flu-like symptoms, diarrhea, headaches, respiratory damage, and other symptoms. If your home has ever experienced any water damage, make sure to check it thoroughly for mold, and call a professional to test your home for mold.

Overflowing gutters, uneven floors, and mold are three signs of house trouble you should definitely not ignore. Make sure to call a professional if you see any of these dangerous problems in your home.
